Residents of East Sooke have paid access through our property taxes to Vancouver Island Regional Library (VIRL) with closest branch being in Sooke . As a VIRL member and resident of East Sooke, VIRL is referred to as your "home" library throughout British Columbia. VIRL is a very large library system with branches all over Vancouver Island, some of the northern Gulf Islands, the coast village of Bella Coola and Haida Gwaii, but excludes the area covered by the Greater Victoria Public Library. Check the website for a listing of all branches.
When you apply for a membership card to VIRL by providing personal photo ID and proof of residence. See the website. You may access any branch of the Vancouver Island Regional Library system freely using your membership card.
Once you are issued a Vancouver Island Regional Library card, you may then apply to any other public library in British Columbia for a BC OneCard. A BC One Card will allow "limited" access to the Greater Victoria Public Library system and can be obtained from any branch of the GVPL by presenting your Vancouver Island Regional District library card and a driver's license or other identification that shows your legal name and current address. The closest GVPL is the Juan de Fuca Branch in Colwood. You may find further information on the BC OneCard through their website.
